Children’s Authors Celebrate Kids "Heart" Authors Day At Titcomb’s Bookshop: Learn Cartooning And Help Heifer International

Titcomb’s Bookshop will participate in Kids "heart" Authors Day on Saturday February 14th by hosting two children’s book authors. Brian Anderson (author of “Dog Eat Doug: It’s A Good Thing They’re Cute”) and Jane Bregoli (author of “The Goat Lady”). Both authors will talk to kids and families and sign books from 10am-12pm on Saturday February 14th.

The morning will be fun for all, with children’s activities and snacks. Brian Anderson will teach cartooning to kids at 10:30am and 11:30am.

Jane Bregoli’s book “The Goat Lady” is a children’s book about a woman who raised goats and helped others in need through Heifer International. There will be animals for children to meet and information about Heifer International and its good works throughout the world.

We encourage (but not require) children to bring some spare change to add to our giving jar. We will try to raise enough money to donate a flock of chicks or a trio of rabbits to a family in need through Heifer International.

Dog Eat Doug is the cartooning creation of Brian Anderson that follows the daily exploits of Sophie, a cheese-loving chocolate Lab with a nose for the nuances of sarcasm and irony, and baby Doug, a healthy, happy newborn with no concept of jealousy and a limitless curiosity. “We're talking cute, but with a Calvin and Hobbes-ian twist." says Mike Wilson, features editor, St. Petersburg Times of Brian Anderson’s Dog Eat Doug cartoon.

Together, this dynamic duo adjusts to sharing the spotlight, the toys, and the affections of Mom and Dad, while exploring nature and its majesty, the couch and its cushions, and the cookie jar and its contents. Brian will sign copies of “Dog Eat Doug” a collection of the cartoon strips and “Nighty Night Sleepy Sleeps” a charming picture book featuring Sophie and Doug who wear themselves out trying not to go to bed. With the support of his wife, Tammy, and the inspiration of his dog, Sophie, Anderson launched Dog Eat Doug in 2005. The family lives in Boston, MA.

"The Goat Lady” tells the true story of a loving, kind, and generous woman who not only helped her neighbors, but also Heifer International. Two children and their mother, new to the neighborhood, befriend Noelie Houle, an elderly lady who raises goats. Her other neighbors bemoan "The Goat Lady’s" rundown house and barnyard animals, but the children see how she cares for her goats, they listen to her stories, and they come to love her.

For many years Noelie provided goat’s milk for people who needed it and sent her extra goat kids to poor people in poor countries through Heifer International. The children’s mother paints a series of paintings of "The Goat Lady," and her art show at the local town hall helps the rest of the community see Noelie’s kindness and courage.

Jane Bregoli lives in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where she and her children befriended Noelie Houle. Jane is an elementary school art teacher. Her paintings have been featured in many shows and publications, and have won numerous awards.

Over 140 authors and illustrators and more than 40 independent booksellers in Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, and New York are participating in Kids ♥ Authors Day. Bookstores will provide bunches of books, and authors and illustrators will personalize them, talk about why they do what they do, and answer any and all questions about writing and drawing. Whether it’s an illustrator demonstrating his technique to a group of fascinated onlookers or a teen author chatting with excited fans about her characters, Kids ♥ Authors Day promises something for book lovers of all ages.

It kills you to see them grow up. But I guess it would kill you quicker if they didn't.
