Barnstable County High School Human Rights Academy to take place April 7th

Students from all over Cape Cod to learn about human right

The Barnstable County Human Rights Commission is hosting the Spring Session of the Human Rights Academy on April 7, 2010 at Camp Burgess in Sandwich.

Each Year the BCHRC hosts the Barnstable County High School Human Rights Academy, in which students from  high schools throughout Cape Cod participate in fall and spring sessions. Last November, over 100 Cape Cod High School students participated in a human rights seminar designed to educate students about the full scale of human rights philosophies and practices. After this orientation, students were invited to return to their schools, and spend the winter preparing projects that address one or more human rights issues.

The purpose of the Human Rights Academy is to promote equal rights for all, regardless of identity, and to provide education and encouragement to many of Cape Cod’s youth around human rights issues.  The Human Rights Academy provides a safe, creative environment for students to learn, express themselves, and absorb ideas about social justice and personal integrity.

On April 7th, the students will present school projects that address human rights issues such as civil rights, gay rights, women’s rights, genocide, human trafficking and more. Presented by the Barnstable County Human Rights Commission, and sponsored in part by a grant from the GALE Fund, the idea of the Academy is to introduce students to different aspects of human rights, and provide an educational journey through responsible and effective social awareness.
